Select one of the key issues facing today’s college freshmen from the list below and use any individual identity theory (or combination of theories) to justify your discussion as to how the issue may influence a student’s college persistence and/or academic success:Academic preparedness Family-related issues Job-related issuesErickson theorized that people develop their identity in different stages starting from babies.  These identity development stages can affect today’s college students and their success in higher education.   In his fourth stage called Industry vs Inferiority, Erickson believed that children begin to expand from their parents although they are still influential in their decisions.  When they feel encourage and support, they begin to test new ideas and new skills that might be helpful or useful to others. This is referred to as industry.  An example of a skill that would be helpful could be seen in students who are successful in math. They may offer to tutor others or form study groups for the benefit of others. This can be seen in high school as well as in college.  If students during this stage do not get encouragement or support, they can develop inferiority complexes.  Freshman college students who struggle with identity may not know what they want to do when they start higher education. They may take a few general classes waiting to see if a particular area of study is the right fit. They may start a career path and then change after two semesters wracking up credits and perhaps debt with no real diploma or career in sight.  This can lead to frustration and disenchantment with college as a whole.
